Week 2: Plate Tectonics

Image
The tectonic plates are broken down pieces of the lithosphere. Plate tectonics is responsible for several of the most devastating natural hazards. The map below illustrates the tectonic plates boundary lines. Countries that are on (or closest to) the boundary lines are the ones that are the most affected.  There are three different boundaries: Divergent boundaries : plates move away from each other. Transform boundaries : plates pass one another. Convergent boundaries: plates move towards one another.  As for Hong Kong it is located rather far away from the nearest boundary with the Pacific Plate on the Circum-Pacific Seismic Belt. Therefore, it is not likely to experience major tectonic movement. However, the boundary that is the closest to it is the Convergent Plate Boundary, which means that its neighboring countries are likely to experience earthquakes, floodings, and landslides. Or in case of subduction zones: explosive volcanoes. It is important to...

Week 1: Hong Kong

Hong Kong  Hong Kong occupies a total area of 1,108 sq. km in the eastern Pearl River Delta of the South China Sea. Most of Hong Kongs land is very mountainous.  Lowlands cover less than one-fifth of Hong Kong's area.  The lower land is mostly located in northern Hong Kong along to border with China.    Hong Kong has a population of about  7.5 million people, due to this it is considered one of the most densely populated regions of the world.  Hazards, disasters, and Catastrophes Hazards: A natural hazard is a natural event that has the power to potentially threaten human life or affect their property. The different types of natural hazards are tectonic, atmospheric, geomorphological, and biological. Some examples of natural hazards include: - Floods - The eruption of a volcano - Earthquakes - Tropical storms    Disaster: A hazardous event that occurs over a limited time span with a defined area. One of these occurs: - Ten or ...
