Week 1: Hong Kong


Hong Kong 

Hong Kong occupies a total area of 1,108 sq. km in the eastern Pearl River Delta of the South China Sea. Most of Hong Kongs land is very mountainous. Lowlands cover less than one-fifth of Hong Kong's area. The lower land is mostly located in northern Hong Kong along to border with China.  Hong Kong has a population of about 7.5 million people, due to this it is considered one of the most densely populated regions of the world. 



Hazards, disasters, and Catastrophes

Hazards:

A natural hazard is a natural event that has the power to potentially threaten human life or affect their property. The different types of natural hazards are tectonic, atmospheric, geomorphological, and biological. Some examples of natural hazards include:

- Floods

- The eruption of a volcano

- Earthquakes

- Tropical storms 

 Disaster:

A hazardous event that occurs over a limited time span with a defined area. One of these occurs:

- Ten or more people are killed

- One hundred or more people are affected 

- Declared state of emergency

- Request for international assistance

Catastrophe:

A massive disaster that requires extremely large amounts of money and takes years to recover. An example is the 2008 Sichuan earthquake in Mianyang, China. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake caused multiple landslides and ended up taking the lives of 70,000 people.
